The Union of Catholic Mothers is commonly called the U.C.M., and is found throughout the United Kingdom, and also in some overseas countries such as Jamaica.
It is an off-shoot of the Catholic Women’s League, and was founded to give support to mothers, both in their marriages and in the brining up of their children in the Catholic Faith. Another aim is to pray for vocations to the priesthood, and the final aim is to help the family in difficulty.
Each parish group has a President, Secretary, Treasurer, Welfare Officer and Study Day Officer and a Chaplain who is usually the Parish Priest.
The President serves for three years and the other officers for five years.
The foundations get together at each other’s churches for Area Masses and get together once or twice a year for Diocesan Meetings.
The Diocesan Officers have the same functions as foundation officers and represent the Diocese ant the National Council.
The National officers have a very high profile and the sub-committees are important organising Study Days and the annual pilgrimage to Walsingham among other things. We are very lucky to have Bishop Brain from Salford as our National Chaplain.
St. Aelred’s foundation has been going for about forty five years. We have meetings every other Tuesday evening and unless we are going out, start with 7p.m. Mass.
This is followed by a business meeting and then the talk or demonstration. We raise money for charity from coffee mornings and the St. Crux days. Out of thirty three members there are more than twenty present, and we find tremendous support and friendship with each other.
